Fountains of Wayne
by Harry S. Pariser
Recipe for a band: First add a pinch of Brian
Wilson harmonies to a mixture of Nick Lowe, XTC, Raspberries, They Might Be
Giants, and Jonathan Richman. Then add a smidgen of toned-down Ramones and Buzzcocks.
Stir well, blend in a studio, and you should have an audio mix approximating
the sound of the Fountains of Wayne.
The latest sensations in pop music, the Fountains of Wayne are spearheaded by
the dynamic duo of 29-year-old singer-composers Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger.
The music magazine Pulse has called their premiere recording Fountains of Wayne
"the most perfect pop record anyone has made in years." And they are
already being compared to such songwriting teams such as Lieber and Stoller,
Goffin and King, and Lennon and McCartney.
The first single off of the album "Radiation Vibe," typifies the band's
stream-of consciousness approach to lyric writing: "Are you alone now did
you lose the monkey he gave you backaches and now you slouch he didn't mean
it he's just a dumb ape reading playboy on your couch and now it's time to say
what i forgot to say baby baby baby come on what's wrong it's a radiation vibe
i'm grooving on don't it make you want to get some sun shine on, shine on, shine
on..."
Another instant hit is "Sick Day" where
the duo croon: "She's making the scene with the coffee and cream and the
copy machine's not working she's a hell of a girl she's alone in the world and
she likes to say hey good lookin she's on her way she's taking a sick day soon."
And the album contains a host of other tasty treats as well.
The band got its start when lead singer Chris Collingwood moved to New York where he reunited with ex-bandmate and former
roommate Adam Schlesinger in December of 1995. Inspired by the quality of Chris's
new material, Adam agreed to join forces to write and record songs together.
And the rest, to trot out a cliche, is history.
Although busy with their recent success, the two are also involved in other
projects. Collingwood recently participated in tributes to Brian Wilson and
Burt Bacharach part of New York's "Loser's Lounge" series, and Schlesinger
has written the title track for the cheery film That Thing You Do!, written
and directed by Tom Hanks.
Hanks selected the song from some 300 submissions, and it has been nominated
for an Academy Award. Schlesinger is also a partner in Scratchie Records, the
Chicago-based label co-owned by D'arcy and James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins
and is one-third of the band Ivy.
And--oh yes--the band's name comes from a gardening store (with a sculpture
garden) on Rte. 46 in New Jersey. The emporium owners are bemused and somewhat
befuddled by the publicity they have been receiving.
