Art Bell by Harry S. Pariser (1997)

UFO's, the Hale-Bopp Comet, chupacabras, Gulf War plagues, and crop circles are all staples of the Art Bell Show, the newest phenomena that is sweeping late night radio. Heard on more than 330 stations in the United States and Canada, the show has been on the air for the past three years but has gained a mass following only recently because of Bell's innovative use of the Internet.
The Art Bell web site points users to added information about topics discussed on the show, and through a special channel found on IRC listeners can chat with one another as the show is being broadcast on the Internet. Those whose local stations don't carry the show can still tune in courtesy of a Real Audio simulcast carried by AudioNet. The entire combination makes the Art Bell Show a truly interactive experience.
"I discuss everything Bigfoot to politics to everything else: it's wide open," says Bell in an interview. "I discuss a lot of subjects that relate to things unusual such as the paranormal. It is fortuitous to be able to show the images I am talking about. I have an HP scanner. When I have guest scheduled to be on I have them send documentary evidence, and scan it and have it put up on my page."
"I talk about life after death, the existence of the soul after death, levitation, abilities of the mind that we obviously have or are just now gaining-it's hard to say which. The paranormal is a gigantic field. If you listen up and down the radio you hear I love Bill Clinton or I hate Bill Clinton so I thought that there have to be other things we can talk about besides politics. So I've created a field for myself."

As part of the program, Weil adds different lifestyle changes as the weeks progress. He recommends people get rid of food that have animal products and start buying organic fruits and vegetables. But Weil believes his program is so popular because it is moderate in its suggestions. He explained in a telephone interview that he's not telling people to give up caffeine or become vegetarian but rather substitute a cup of green tea for a cup of coffee and eat more soy products. "I'm asking people to make real changes; changes that are familiar; it's not all or nothing," he said.
Parts of the program were challenging though. "Different people found different things hard," Weil said. "Some people found the walking hard, others found the breathing exercises hard, some found eating soy products hard. There was no one thing." Weil believes that people take his book seriously because he offers very specific advice that people connect with on an intellectual level. Since he explains what the rationale is behind his suggestions, people understand what he recommends and therefore act on the information.

As any listener of the show will attest, Art deals with the guests he has on and their weird theories and ideas without a hint of incredulity. The question though at the top of everyone's list is does he really believe in the existence of UFOs?
"Of course I do, " he says. "It may be our government which actually has generations and generations of technical abilities beyond what we have been told about, and it may be beings from elsewhere. Both alternatives I consider to be equally possible."
Keith Swanson, Programming Manager at KSFO, a talk radio show station based in San Francisco, rates Bell " right up the top of the heap; he is rivaled by no one in the majority of West coast cities."
Swanson says the show's popularity is derived from the psychology of the all-night audience.
"Something different happens between midnight and eight AM. It is popular with that whole world that does their work all night long. It's easier to categorize a Rush Limbaugh or a Howard Stern. Bell is more complex.-which is probably why the audience likes him: he becomes habit forming."
