The area known as Tortuguero, "region of turtles," is on the northeastern side of the country. These flatlands (Las Llanuras de Tortuguero) were formed over millions of years as sediment washed down river systems and was trapped and stabliized by vegetation such as the raffia palms. One of the nation's most popular parks (around 30,000 visitors per year), its waterways are excellent places to see wildlife.
