Promotion for the elections. The "raining umbrella"-- actually a banyan tree (which is suposedly a unifying symbol) -- is the symbol for the previosly reigning military-controlled Golkar Party (which, before the last election, had always won every election). The black box was the symbol for the Muslim United Development Party until it was ordered to adopt a less controversial one. The bull head represents the Indonesian Democratic Party; it was discredited by the government's 1997 crackdown only to rise again and control the government under the leadership of Megawati Suharto, the daughter of Indonesia's first president who Suharto deposed in a US-backed military coup and a mass slaughter of up to a million "communists." The latter two parties were formed by the government in 1971 after the then-ruling Golkar military government forced nine opposing parties to unite.
