Gavin Newsom: "I can't speak coherently for two minutes straight."

Gavin Newsom and Angela Alioto: A Short History
November 25th, 2003
Alioto calls Gavin Newsom “the biggest panhandler in town.”
“When she says Gavin Newsom is ‘the biggest panhandler in town,' Alioto may be using her sense of humor to get your attention, but her meaning is no joke.” (By Hank Donat - www.mistersf.com - July 1, 2003)

Alioto says, “Newsom couldn't care less about homeless people.”
“‘There are a lot of real ways of taking care of homelessness,' Alioto says, ‘Newsom couldn't care less about homeless people. He put Care Not Cash on the ballot to run for mayor, not to take care of homelessness. You can't use the poor like that and really get away with it in the long run.'” (By Hank Donat, www.mistersf.com - July 1, 2003)

Alioto says, “Gavin Newsom doesn't have a clue how people suffer.”
“‘I think that's a personal experience. Gavin Newsom doesn't have a clue how people suffer. If you see someone you can relate to having a hard time, then you can get it.'” (By Hank Donat, www.mistersf.com - July 1, 2003)

Alioto says campaign is “about making sure Mr. Gavin Newsom gets nowhere near Room 200.”
“‘This isn't about Angela Alioto,' [Alioto] said. ‘It's about universal health care. It's about good wages. It's about making sure Mr. Gavin Newsom gets nowhere near Room 200,' the mayor's office in City.” (By John Wildermuth, Julian Guthrie, San Francisco Chronicle , October 26, 2003)

Alioto claims Newsom can't bring diverse factions together.
“Alioto said she would bring people together, and inferred that Newsom, who has had a rocky relationship with his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors, could not. ‘There's going to be resistance step by step if certain people are elected mayor,' [Alioto] said.” (By Rachel Gordon, San Francisco Chronicle , October 30, 2003)

Alioto attacks Newsom for not fully disclosing his business relationships.
“‘He thinks he's going to be mayor of San Francisco and not tell us who he owes his career to? Not without a fight he's not.'” (By J.K. Dineen, San Francisco Examiner , April 1, 2003)

Newsom campaign manager, Eric Jaye, calls Alioto a “political terrorist.”
“‘The only thing new I could see in today's sordid episode is she is showing that she is going to run a thoroughly negative campaign. It's the act of a political terrorist. She is trying to blow herself up and Gavin Newsom alongside her.'” (By J.K. Dineen, San Francisco Examiner , April 1, 2003)

Alioto attacks Newsom for exploiting his relationship with KTVU morning host Ross McGowan.
“Alioto also questioned Newsom's frequent appearances on KTVU with morning host Ross McGowan, who is an investor in one of Newsom's restaurants. Newsom appeared on the station 84 times, including nine times between September and Election Day last fall, when his controversial measure Care Not Cash was passed by voters.
Eisenberg [Alioto aide] said the appearances amounted to $500,000 in free political advertising, a claim the Newsom campaign called ‘beyond reprehensible.'
‘If she wants to take on Newsom, fine, but leave Ross McGowan and Channel 2 out of it.' [Eric] Jaye said. ‘We simply won't drag him into this.'” (By J.K. Dineen, San Francisco Examiner , April 1, 2003)

In letter to Newsom, Alioto calls “political terrorist” comment “defamation.”
“Equating me to a terrorist ‘trying to blow herself up'… ‘along side' you is intolerable. Since Mr. Jaye made this statement on your behalf, I ask that you terminate his involvement in your campaign. Anything less than termination is ratification of such defamation per se on your part.” (April 7, 2003 letter from Angela Alioto to Gavin Newsom)
